A PSA for the horsey set

In case people of the horsey set haven’t heard, Courtney King, a Grand Prix dressage rider and Olympian, has been badly injured after, according to the reports, the horse she was riding took a minor slip.

More details here: http://www.behindthebitblog.com/2010/03/courtney-king-injured-while-riding.html

I know I’m preaching to the converted here, but I figure it’s worth repeating, in case one person who doesn’t ride with a helmet sticks one on his/her head:

To not do so is just dumb. No point in mincing words about it, especially when there are hoodles of studies that show most riding-related head traumas don’t occur with spectacular accidents on high-struck performance horses, but with weird, freaky things that happen with ye old backyard, “bomb-proof” (in quotations because there’s no such thing, in my opinion) steeds. (Edited to add, for clarity’s sake: none of the reports state whether Ms. King was wearing a helmet or not. Either way, this is still a horrible thing to happen.)

Thoughts going out to Ms. King and family, and happy SAFE riding, everyone!
